HAMDEN, Conn. – The Syracuse University field hockey team received a late goal from sophomore forward Brittany Shannon (Ronks, Pa.) to pull out a 2-1 victory over the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Thursday afternoon in Hamden, Conn. SU is now 2-2 on the season. The Bobcats fell to 1-3.
“We didn’t bring our best game, but were able to come away with a victory,” associate head coach Mary McCraken said. “We were disappointed that we could not take advantage of the opportunities we created for ourselves, but Quinnipiac did a good job of pressing us.”
Both teams had chances in the early going, but the first grade-A opportunity went the way of the Orange. After Quinnipiac goalie Jenna Grossman came through with a point-blank stop from in-close, Syracuse was awarded a penalty stroke. However, Grossman denied senior forward Meg Ryan (Lancaster, Pa.) on the stroke, lunging to her right and deflecting it away with her stick.
SU finally broke through with 7:49 play in the first half on a goal from senior back Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa.) off a penalty corner. Ryan and senior back Jess Wreski (Middletown, Pa.) helped setup the play.
Quinnipiac evened the game early in the second half. Megan Dahle threaded a long pass along the right wing that Jennifer Kinchla chased down inside the circle before firing a low shot into the left corner of the cage.
SU had a chance to go back in front a few minutes later when it was awarded another stroke, but Sola's shot hit off the right post.
However, the Orange went back in front on a rebound goal from Shannon with 14:45 to play.
Sophomore goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.) made two saves on the afternoon for Syracuse. Grossman finished with a nine saves for the Bobcats.
SU gets to open the home portion of its schedule on Sunday when the Orange hosts Lafayette on Sept. 10 at noon at Coyne Field. Live video and audio will be available on suathletics.com as part of SU’s All-Access subscription package. It is the first time the service will feature live coverage of Orange field hockey. Live stats will also be available here.
